Organizing By Colour
How You Deal Differently with Different Colours

By Leanne Crain

As I was checking my inbox this morning, I was going through my neat little categorize button and assigning colours to different emails. Orange, Blue, Gold, Green, you get the idea. As I assign each of them a colour, I am telling myself that each email needs to be addressed in a different way, and labelling them helps me do this.

What on earth does this have to do with leadership? A lot, actually! At BizXcel, we all know which colour we are. While everyone has all colours in them, one colour will be stronger than the rest. When we interact with each other, we label each other with those colours. Often, we do not even realize we are doing it anymore, and yet it is probably one of the key factors in making our team here function at its top performance level.

Just as you address each colour-coded email differently, we have learned to address each other differently. Personality Dimensions helped us label ourselves, and show the rest of our team what colour we are, so that we can all learn to communicate more efficiently. Not only does it help communications, it has improved the products and services we offer too. When I create something, I know my colour will shine through on it. If I need it to appeal to a different colour, I can go to one of my team members that is that colour and have them go through it, or help me with it. Also, by knowing these, it allows our leaders to quickly choose who might be best suited for a certain task.

Imagine if every day you walked into work knowing exactly how to address each person, in order to have the most beneficial conversation with them. What a powerful tool! Not only that, if you happen to have a conflict with someone, chances are you can relate back to the colour that they are, and both of you can work together to find a more effective way of communication. Through knowing yourself and others on your team on a more personality-based level, you can all function to the best of your abilities, making your team reach its highest potential for success. So, what colour are you?
