Why e-Learning? - Part 3
By Renée Eaton

Over the last few issues, we've discussed how time and budget constraints and learning styles are compelling companies to switch to e-learning for training. The final reason many companies are making this shift to e-learning is because of their employees.

With Generation Y moving into the workplace, businesses are increasingly feeling the pressure to accommodate them. One of these areas is training. In order to retain this group, companies have to find a way to train them that engages them. Employers are turning to e-learning because it appeals to a style they are used to and comfortable with, gaming. Simulations and games that combine high-tech with interactive approaches are popping up in an evermore increasing amount of businesses in order to keep new employees enthused.

These employees are looking for workplaces that are challenging and provide them with opportunities to develop and they want it on their schedule. The technical nature of Generation Y has made them keen multi-taskers, however, the downfall of this is that they have difficulty concentrating for long periods of time on one task. Mandatory facilitator-led training sessions may lead to angst and unhappiness amongst this growing co-hort of the workforce. E-learning meets their needs on all fronts, it engages them, it is flexible and it allows them to learn as much as they want in short periods of time.

E-learning is starting to become a standard in workplaces. It is allowing businesses to continually educate their employees effectively on their time and on company budget. So don't be surprised if one day your twenty-something co-worker asks you what your high score on finance management was.
